When it comes to promoting a fringe sport like horse racing to young meatheads, nothing works quite like unveiling a drunken centaur as a mascot. We’d like to think that’s just common knowledge.
So far, the strategy has worked to funnel ample publicity to this year’s Preakness “InfieldFEST” which introduced a manimal known as Kegasus to serve in the prestigious role of “Lord of the Infield”. Of course, some of the publicity from the mainstream media and horse racing traditionalists is negative, because god knows you don’t want to find a way to peak the interest of young(er) non racing fans who had a mass exodus from the Pimlico infield when the “BYOB” status was revoked in 2009. Kegasus has a job to do and that job is to bring attention to himself and hope that it leads to meatheads finding their way back into the infield. He seems to be in good form:
