Tommy Kelly needed only one preseason game to be convinced Oakland's defense is already vastly improved from a year ago.
The veteran defensive tackle has fully embraced the changes made by first-year coach Dennis Allen and defensive coordinator Jason Tarver and says he expects the defense to be one of the top five in the NFL in 2012
That might be asking a bit much from a team that ranked 29th in overall defense and surrendered the second-most touchdowns in the league last season.
Then again, Kelly has been defying odds since he entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2004. A Pro Bowl alternate each of the past two seasons, Kelly has developed into a player who Allen believes can be one of the game's premier defensive tackles.

Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly believes that the Raiders defense isn’t the same one that finished 2011. The Oakland defense was 29th in the NFL in yards allowed and 31st in giving up touchdowns. New Head Coach Dennis Allen is installing a new system and Kelly likes what he has seen so far.
“To me, the biggest change is probably Dennis Allen and defensive coordinator Jason Tarver...
Jacoby Ford went down in the first half of the Oakland Raiders game vs. Arizona. He caught a 9 yard pass from Carson Palmer and got up very gingerly. He limped off the field and at first refused the help of the trainers. He looked to be very frustrated, which usually means the player knows [...]

If you’re an NFL rookie who thinks you have it bad, just be thankful you don’t play in Oakland. We don’t really know if their rookies actually get the worst haircuts or if they simply do a great job of publicizing it, but any rookie who plays for the Raiders might as well completely shave their own head before training camp begins. Otherwise, there’s no guarantee you won’t...
It was bad enough for Arizona quarterback Kevin Kolb that Oakland's Tommy Kelly sacked him in the end zone for a safety.
What the Raiders defensive end had to say about Kolb after Oakland's 31-27 loss to the Cardinals Friday night probably hurt much worse.
''He is skittish. He is scared back there,'' Kelly said. ''Anytime anybody gets close to him...
Oakland Raiders’ training camp is off and running and the injuries are piling up. Kevin Kolb isn't really that good. No, it's not because he royally messed with my fantasy football team last season. It's because his production simply hasn't been there, despite the quarterback receiving a nice payday from the Cardinals prior to last season. Raiders defensive tackle Tommy Kelly thinks there's some glaring reasons for Kolb's struggles at the...

Ryan Mathews says there is ‘no doubt’ that he will play week 1 against the Oakland Raiders. Well, I have doubts. It’s good to hear a player have confidence and that he may ‘ahead of schedule’ on his rehab, but as Norv Turner said “Ryan is NOT a Doctor.” I have laid out my draft plan for Mathews and still think he can provide...
