With all the injuries plaguing the New England Patriots offense it will be Kenbrell Thompkins who will be the key to a Patriots victory over the New York Jets on Thursday night. I know what you’re thinking, that’s crazy he’s only a rookie and he looked all sorts of off in his first game against the Buffalo Bills. Well you’re right he wasn’t in sync with Tom Brady against the Bills, but he did show a lot of promise and it was only his first regular season game. Brady and Thompkins have chemistry and it showed during the preseason. Thompkins finished the preseason with 15 receptions and 166 yards, the Patriots leading receiver during that time. And now you’re saying, well the preseason means nothing, there are always players who play well during the garbage games and then suck during the regular season. Well, you’re right again but the fact of the matter is that Brady likes Thompkins If he didn’t he wouldn’t have targeted him 14 times in the first game, despite the fact that Thompkins was making multiple rookie mistakes. Brady only targeted a proven veteran like Chad Ochocinco Johnson 32 times in the whole season. Thompkins has nearly half that in his first game. Brandon Lloyd did much better with 130 targets, but if you multiply Thompkins’ stats out over a season he’ll have close to 200 targets, give or take. And now, this is why he’ll be the x factor in the Jets game. He was getting open against the Bills but he was making mistakes like not moving his feet after the ball was thrown or not having a sense of where he was on the field. All those mistakes are easily correctable and now he has a feel for how a live action regular season game feels. He’ll watch film, talk with Brady and his coaches and work those things out. Also, with Danny Amendola likely out and Shane Vereen definitely out, the Jets are going to key onJulian Edelman. This means that Edelman will likely be shadowed by the Jets best corner Antonio Cromartie. That leaves fellow rookie Dee Milliner to cover Thompkins. If Thompkins can continue to create space and eliminate some of the small errors he made then he should have a big game against the Jets and help the Patriots to overcome the injury bug for this game
