If you’re like most casual fans you completely ignore the importance of special teams when it comes to the game of football. If you’re one of those rabid, obsessed fans or a coach then you know how crucial special teams can be in the outcome of a game, especially at the professional level. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, the only thing that appears settled on special teams right now is that the return man will be Chris Rainey. After that, things are up in the air with the same doubt of a Shaun Suisham 50-yard field goal attempt. With punter Jeremy Kapinos having been out throughout the preseason, rookie Drew Butler has handled the chore and has done ‘so-so’ to this point. His average of 47.5 isn’t bad, but he has also been helped by a couple of poor kicks that weren’t returned and rolled a great distance. I really felt coming into the preseason that Butler was going to win this job simply because his price would be lower and because he has really solid hang-time which coaches and playe...

Starks, Redman feeling good after practice week

Neither Max Starks nor Isaac Redman knew how their healed injuries would react when the players returned to full practice with the Pittsburgh Steelers this week. Steelers activate Rashard Mendenhall off PUP

In a surprising move, the Steelers have activated Rashard Mendenhall off the PUP list. This move is surprising because everyone, including Steelers GM Kevin Colbert himself, believed that Mendenhall would begin the season on the PUP and have to miss at least 6 games after tearing his ACL last December. No substitute for experience for Steelers Mike Adams

The Left Tackle position is arguably the most important piece of the offensive line on any NFL team. The Center is the captain of the unit, the anchor, lynch pin or whatever descriptive word you care to use. He’s the one that calls all the plays for the line and makes sure everyone has their assignments. Without a good LT though, you spent a lot of time running for your life or...
