It was not that long ago when it was a question whether Gary Kubiak would be retained as the head coach of the Texans. After finishing the 2010 season with a 6-10 record, many Texans fans and members of the Houston media believed it was time for a change. The change owner Bob McNair made was to hire Wade Phillips as the defensive coordinator and the result was a 10-6 record and the team's first playoff appearance in 2011.
For that result McNair rewarded Kubiak with a contract extension which will give the coach security through the 2015 season. General Manager Rick Smith, too, was extended through the 2016 season.
"I think the coaching performance last year by Gary was outstanding," said McNair. "With the injuries that we had I don't know how he could have done a better job."
The Texans were forced to play a majority of the season with several key players injured including quarterback Matt Schaub, receiver Andre Johnson and pass rusher Mario Williams.
