Kyle Shanahan not surprised by Brock Purdy's mastery of the 49ers offense
Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has a lot of trust in his second-year quarterback, Brock Purdy. That showed Sunday afternoon during the 35-16 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Purdy turned in an impressive performance, one for the 49ers record books. Shanahan spoke to reporters via a conference call on Monday afternoon. The coach was asked how he feels about his quarterback's play now that he's had time to review the film from the Week 4 contest more thoroughly.

"A lot like I think we felt last night," Shanahan responded. "He was pretty good. He made all the right throws, and the O-line played well, gave him some good time, some real good pockets. I thought all the eligibles, receivers, tight ends, running backs played well, but he was awesome yesterday."

Purdy was nearly perfect on Sunday. He completed 20 of 21 pass attempts for 283 yards and a touchdown. He even ran for another score. Purdy owned a passer rating of 134.6. His 95.2 completion percentage set a new franchise record, a surprising accomplishment considering the quarterback pedigree in 49ers history.

Shanahan was asked about his young quarterback's progression since his rookie year regarding mastering the offense and perfecting audibles and checks.

While Purdy has been turning in a superb 2023 effort, the coach noted that the 23-year-old was also pretty good in those areas last season.

"He came in right away and didn't make much mistakes on that stuff," Shanahan said. "His first game was the hardest because he didn't get the reps and stuff, but after that, he always did get the reps, and he was very prepared in those games. That's why we were so impressed with him and the seven games we got to play with him (last season). And that's why he gave us the confidence to go into this year with him.

"And he took off right where he left off. And just like everybody, the more you get out there, the more you put yourself through it, all the stressful situations, the more confidence you get, the easier it gets. But he was so good at it last year, and I feel like he's stayed the same if not gotten a little bit better."
