Philip Rivers' subpar season has been a topic of national interest since the events depicted in the above video, which deadens my soul a little bit every time someone clicks on it.
A lot of theories have been thrown around. Some people think he might be concealing an injury. Some people think the Chargers offense is severely crippled when Antonio Gates isn't healthy. Some think San Diego's receivers aren't very good at getting separation. Others point the finger at a running game that's nowhere near where it should be.
LaDainian Tomlinson has another theory, though, and his opinion is not to be dismissed, because he spent the better part of four years side-by-side with Rivers.
"I don't know what Philip may be going through right now. But I will say, to me, he seems distracted for some reason. It just seems like he's distracted. I always said this: It's hard to be the guy on the team. When they say this is your team. It's hard to be that guy ...

The Jets running back had some interesting things to say about his former Chargers teammate, saying Rivers "looks distracted" and from his experience, that "it's hard to be 'the guy'."
Philip Rivers wants to set the record straight.
TV cameras appeared to catch Rivers saying ''This is the worst day ever,'' moments after he fumbled away the snap on Monday night at Kansas City as the San Diego Chargers were driving to what appeared to be certain victory in the last minute of regulation.
Instead, the Chiefs recovered and went on to win 23-20 in overtime...
The San Diego Chargers lost another tough game this past Monday night, and following yet another costly turnover by quarterback Philip Rivers, the camera clearly caught him uttering the sentence, “This is the worst day ever.”
Now, granted, the microphones were not focused on Rivers. You cannot tell for sure that is exactly what Rivers said, but it had to be along...
Philip Rivers has had what many would consider a brilliant NFL career. Since taking the reigns as starter 6 years ago, he’s become one of the NFL’s best QBs. But he’s failed to lead the talented Chargers to the Super Bowl, and on Monday Night threw his league leading 11th interception of the season. Adding insult to injury he then mishandled Nick Hardwick’s...
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Less than 40 hours had passed since San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers had fumbled away a game-winning field goal attempt on Monday Night Football. San Diego went on to lose in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs and fell into a three-way tie atop the AFC West at 4-3.Now, Rivers has to prepare in a short week for a game against the undefeated Green Bay...
Count LaDainian Tomlinson among the people who have been confounded by Philip Rivers’ poor performance this season. Rivers has thrown a league-high 11 interceptions and has a pedestrian 80.7 quarterback rating through seven games.
Tomlinson, who was teammates with Rivers in San Diego, didn’t ...
When we passed along LaDainian Tomlinson’s remarks about Philip Rivers earlier Thursday, we guessed that they wouldn’t play too well in San Diego. Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith did not disappoint. Smith took issue with the notion that Rivers is distracted and struggling this season because of the pressure inherent in being ‘The Guy.’ “I agree with what…
Based on where they were drafted and the production owners were expecting of them, there have been no two bigger non-injury busts in fantasy football this season than Philip Rivers and Chris Johnson. (We’ll forgive Jamaal Charles and Peyton Manning for their season-ending injuries).
They are the stars of our latest photo story: “Bust Buddies”.
Note for my dad and others:...
LaDainian Tomlinson knows the distractions that come with being the central figure of a team. The Jets RB wonders if ex-Chargers teammate Philip Rivers is struggling because of that.
Veteran says Jets can't win the division without winning this week
You can't state the stakes for the Jets on Sunday in Buffalo any simpler than LaDainian Tomlinson did on Thursday afternoon.
"Let’s be honest: this next month is going to tell us if we’re going to be champs in the AFC East, and that’s the way we look at it. Starting with this game. Because we can’t be champs if we don’t win this game. It’s a big challenge...
