49ers coaches work “daily” with rookie RB LaMichael James on handling punt returns. Frank Gore ranks in the top-five in the NFL in yards per carry and is signed through 2014 while Kendall Hunter is entrenched as the backup. With Ted Ginn due to reach free agency in 2013, James’ future could be returning punts and functioning as a change-of-pace back. He’s yet to be active for a game this season, but will finally get his shot this week.
The Niners drafted James to come in and eventually take over for Frank Gore, but he has not hit the field yet. Expect him to hit the holes with a full head of steam this week.

NFL Report Cards: San Francisco 49ers First Half Report Card
Overview:
As the San Francisco 49ers come off their bye week, John Harbaugh should be fairly happy with how the team has played so far. At 6-2 San Francisco has shown their ability to be the best team in the league in a win in Green Bay, but once again struggled in a loss to the Giants. 49ers Offense, Alex Smith Owe Success to Best Offensive Line in NFL
They say you win football games in the trenches — San Francisco has proven that old adage this season.
The 49ers general manager Trent Baalke has built his football team the right way, focusing on the offensive and defensive lines first, then building around those pieces. His defensive line was the best in football last year, and this year the offensive line has followed suit....
QB Alex Smith has been a key to 49ers' success
(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) When Alex Smith is good he can be very good. When Smith is very good, the San Francisco 49ers are practically unbeatable.

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing to play a 3-5 St. Louis Rams team with a battered offensive line and an aging running back, Steven Jackson.
