There has been a lot of attention being paid to the Las Vegas Raiders’ brain trust of general manager Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels, both of whom came from the New England Patriots, bringing in players whom they are familiar with from their time there.

Both of their major offensive signings this offseason, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, spent time with McDaniels in New England are familiar with the system he runs there. And now the franchise is set to bring in another.

According to our own Ryan Ward, the Raiders have signed longtime veteran backup quarterback Brian Hoyer to a two-year contract:

Hoyer has spent a large portion of his career with the Patriots under McDaniels and knows the system extremely well. He is a solid veteran and a good mind to have in the quarterback room but is also no threat to Garoppolo as the starter for this team next season.

Hoyer came into the NFL as an undrafted quarterback out of Michigan State with the Patriots in 2009 and spent his first three seasons there, never starting a game and attempting just 43 passes. He bounced around to a few different teams and had decent success in Cleveland and Houston, but has settled into a backup role with the Patriots for much of the last six seasons including the last three.

Over the last three years, Hoyer has appeared in just seven games, completing 29-of-41 passes for 394 yards and one touchdown. Last season Hoyer started one game but suffered a concussion in just the second series and remained on injured reserve for the remainder of the year.

Raiders GM Dave Ziegler calls QB Jimmy Garoppolo a ‘Proven leader, proven winner’

The Raiders will have all new faces in their quarterback room with the top man being Jimmy Garoppolo whom the team signed to a three-year contract this offseason. Garoppolo is familiar with the leaders of the Raiders in GM Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels, and Ziegler believes Garoppolo brings a proven track record of success.

Ziegler called Garoppolo a ‘proven leader’ and ‘proven winner’ noting that he has won 70% of his starts in his career and that has to mean something. Ziegler also pointed to Garoppolo being familiar with the offensive system being run, but in the end, it is about winning, and regardless of anything else, Garoppolo wins.
