The last time the Chicago Bears selected a wide receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft was in 2001. With the eighth pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, the Bears picked University of Michigan wide receiver David Terrell. Terrell was a star at Michigan playing on the same offense as Tom Brady. But he turned out to be one of the biggest busts in Chicago Bears history. In 53 games with the Bears, Terrell reeled in 128 catches for 1602 yards and nine touchdowns. His best statistical season was in 2004-05, when he caught 42 catches for 699 yards. He was released by the Bears following that season and signed with the Broncos, but only appeared in one game for them. Recently fired GM Jerry Angelo shied away from drafting receivers because of the lack of success especially in 2001 with David Terrell. Don’t expect new GM Phil Emery to shy away from selecting a wide receiver in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Its a clear need and Emery is known for his talent evaluating. The Bears ...

The Chicago Bears hired Jeremy Bates on Tuesday to coach their quarterbacks, reuniting him with Jay Cutler. During his time in Annapolis, Bears GM Phil Emery was a leader among Midshipmen

Bates' mandate: Put Cutler in spots to succeed

Steve Rosenbloom: Jeremy Bates figures to be the Bears' passing game chief with the title of quarterbacks coach, sort of opposite the way that Phil Emery seems to be the chief scout with the title of GM. Bates' successful history with Jay Cutler means he should push hard for plays that take advantage of Cutler's greatest assets.
