Mike Leach has rejuvenated Washington State's football program - and produced some restless nights for opponents - all before he's even coached a game.
A Brigham Young defensive assistant acknowledged as much as he prepared for Leach's Air Raid attack in Thursday night's opener in Provo.
BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall is familiar with the Air Raid: He was New Mexico's defensive coordinator when the Lobos faced Leach's Texas Tech teams three times a decade ago. The Red Raiders won 24-3, 42-30 and 49-0, respectively.
The nationally televised game is full of subplots. Leach is coaching his first game since being fired in 2009 amid allegations he mistreated a player with a concussion. The game is on ESPN, who Leach is suing. And it's against his alma mater, BYU.

THIS IS GOING to take time. That much is apparent after Washington State struggled to gain any consistency on offense and had no answer for Brigham Young’s first-half hurry-up scheme during Thursday’s 30-6 loss to open coach Mike Leach’s era in Provo, Utah.
When Mike Leach was the head coach at Texas Tech, his offensive line lined up in a wider-split stance. When former Texas Tech offensive line coach and Leach assistant Robert Anae was BYU’s offensive coordinator, BYU’s offensive line employed a similar split formation. This Thursday, BYU’s defensive line will once again face the splits.
By now, you have probably heard 100 times that the Brigham Young Cougars will play against a Pac-12 team coached by BYU alum Mike Leach in the season opener. As interesting as that sounded the first 10 times you heard it, a BYU alum coaching in the Pac-12 is hardly an anomaly.Did you know that three Pac-12 head coaches and five Pac-12 assistant coaches are BYU alumni? The head coaches...
WSU FANS ARE just two days away from getting their first in-game look at the 2012 Cougs led by Mike Leach – and the energy and excitement is palpable. But before jumping the gun, Cougar fans also need to be realistic with their expectations for this season. Read on for my predictions on all 12 games on the Washington State schedule.
For all the enthusiasm surrounding the arrival of Mike Leach at Washington State, all the excitement about the Air Raid offense and all the goofy jokes surrounding the even goofier bear hunting pictures, there was one thing a lot of college football fans seemed to forget entering the Cougars season opener on Thursday night: The Washington State football program is still very...
PROVO, Utah – Washington State’s execution between the sidelines left much to be desired Thursday evening, and coach Mike Leach said his players also need to execute better between the ears.
TRUTH, JUSTICE and instability in the Middle East. A conversation with a blue-ribbon political panel? No, just Washington State head man Mike Leach weighing in.
Embarrassed on National Television
The Washington St. Cougars arrived in Provo to face BYU with more notoriety than they’ve received since the Rose Bowl days during the early 2000s. Despite his ongoing defamation suit against the network, ESPN jumped at the chance to air Mike Leach’s return to the sidelines on national television to showcase his prolific Air Raid offense...
There's just three days until the 2012 football season gets underway and BYU takes on Washington State in a nationally televised showdown for Cougar supremacy. After Monday's practice, Coach Mendenhall answered questions about a wide variety of topics, including his depth chart, Mike Leach's offense, and much more.
The North is Lucky
There is no doubt that the Pac-12 is rich with great coaches. From experienced veterans such as Mike Riley (Oregon State Beavers) to the new guys such as Rich Rodgriguez (Arizona Wildcats) and Mike Leach (Washington State Cougars), the Pac-12 has received an influx of great coaches as of late.
And yet, despite all of the talent at the coaching position, few would...
South Carolina is breathing a sigh of relief. The Mike Leach reconstruction process at Washington State still has a long way to go. Todd Graham's high octane offense was in fifth gear at Arizona State and we had a triple overtime game going late in to the night. Throw in a couple of FCS upsets over FBS squads and we had a pretty good mix to kick off the 2012 college football...
