PLAYERS: Roger Goodell
Could the NFL decide to scrap the Pro Bowl for the Senior Bowl? (Credit: AP Photo) Last year’s Pro Bowl was nothing but an embarrassment for the NFL. Players looked disinterested and showed an extreme lack of effort on the field. Obviously the players do not want to risk injuring themselves in a meaningless game. The Pro Bowl became such a joke that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said NFL all-stars needed to start playing hard and he was let down by the game. Tonight, the 2013 NFL Pro Bowl rosters will be announced. Along with the announcement comes discussion about whether or not the game is actually necessary and how to solve the problems from last year. Eric Grubman, the NFL’s executive vice president of business ventures spoke on the Pro Bowl and the future of the game today: “It’s tough to view it as ‘working’ now. What works about it is there’s recognition of great players, the players enjoy it, the fans enjoy it, and it gives people an opportunity to focus on football for a week when there wouldn’t be anything. . . . “What’s not working is the players, for their own reasons, have not put on a true NFL quality game. We understand their logic, but there’s no getting around it — it’s not an NFL game.” One option the league’s floating is to make it a college all-star game, perhaps even moving the Senior Bowl into that time slot, to create a celebration of the future as well as the present. Moving the Senior Bowl to the Pro Bowl slot would be an amazing idea. If the NFL was smart they would move the Senior Bowl to the Pro Bowl weekend and still bring the NFL’s all-stars to Hawaii. The all-stars could participate in fun events such as a celebrity game or skills competition. Then, the college seniors could play a game that would involve players who were fighting to improve their draft stock. The NFL could also find a way to incorporate the NFL all-stars and college seniors during the Senior Bowl weekend. Hopefully the NFL finds a way to make this happen. Roger Goodell has lost his fastball

Just last summer, everyone in the NFL world was marveling at the sweeping power being shown by Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL offices, when they effectively castrated the 2012 New Orleans Saints over the so-called Bountygate scandal. Before that, it was the fines and loss of draft picks stripped from the New England Patriots [...]

Column: Set your DVR for Pro Bowl. Now. Seriously

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By JIM LITKE AP Sports Columnist NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell warned players a while back that he was prepared to drop the Pro Bowl if they didn't pick up the level of play. Next thing you know, he'll be threatening to hold his breath. Instead of calling his bluff, which is what anyone who doesn't get the consolation prize of a week's vacation...

NFL Coroner's Report: New Orleans Saints Autopsy

It's appropriate here to pay tribute to TV's most famous coroner, Mr. Jack Klugman, who passed away Christmas Eve at age 90. Take care, sir, and remember: on those notes that Tony Randall left you in the beyond, "F.U." is nothing vulgar. In case you forget. This week's stuffing of the stiffs provides a challenge for the Football Nation ME's office, as a quartet...

Seahawks CB Richard Sherman Wins PED Appeal Against NFL

After spending yesterday passive aggressively complaining on Twitter about being snubbed from the Pro Bowl, Richard Sherman finally has something to hang his hat on. He has officially won his appeal against the NFL’s claim of his use of performance enhancing drugs. Does anyone else think it’s strange he refers to Roger Goodell as “lord”? Not to be pessimists, but we were...

Who is Snubbed From the Pro Bowl Roster? Really?

Last night, the NFL and the NFL Network revealed the players that will be on this year’s 2012 NFL Pro Bowl roster. I think if the league office takes a look at the numbers, I’d venture a guess to say that more people were watching the Little Caesars Bowl game between Central Michigan and Western Kentucky. I know I was. In usual, predictable, mainstream media fashion, copious...
