Texans reached agreement with former Raiders Pro Bowl punter Shane Lechler, as @mcclain_on_nfl reported. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 23, 2013 Former Raiders Pro-Bowl P Shane Lechler is signing a 3-year, $5.5 million contract that includes a $1 million signing bonus with Texans. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 23, 2013 The Houston Texans have agreed to terms with free agent punter and Texas native, Edward “Shane” Lechler. The addition of Lechler potentially gives the Texans one of the top punters in the NFL and one of the best in NFL history. Lechler was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the 2000 NFL Draft in the 5th round (142nd overall) out of Texas A&M University. The Texans showed interest in Lechler the last time he came up for free agency in 2009 but the Raiders retained him at $4 million a season. Lechler brings another proven veteran and playoff experienced player who looks like he can contribute as long as he is willing to keep punting. He has played in 158 regular season league games and seven playoff games, including Super Bowl XXXVII. One of the most decorated punters in NFL history, Lechler was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2000s and has been a staple in Oakland for over 13 seasons. He also has 7 Pro Bowl appearances and 9 All Pro Selections to his name. He is currently the NFL’s all-time leader in career punting average. Lechler joins kicker Randy Bullock as an all Texas A&M Aggies kicking unit.
