Lions could make move with Jared Goff this offseason
Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions have a decision to make on their quarterback this offseason and it sounds like that choice has already been made.

Quarterback Jared Goff is entering the final year of his contract in 2024, and the Lions appear eager to keep him. Goff’s agent, Ryan Tollner, told Kalyn Kahler of The Athletic that the team has indicated their desire to work out an extension this summer.

“They said all the right things to Jared and to me, that (this season) is not about him having to prove himself for another year,” Tollner said. “Inevitably, players always feel that way. If you don’t make a long-term commitment, then they feel like you don’t completely believe in them.”

Goff was regarded as a transition quarterback when the Lions acquired him from the Los Angeles Rams in the Matthew Stafford trade three years ago. He has instead become the starter for a division-winning team while posting some of the best numbers of his career. He threw for 30 touchdowns during the 2023-24 regular season and was even getting MVP buzz early in the year.

Goff is still playing on the $134 million deal he signed with the Rams in 2019. One would imagine he will be paid in the same bracket as the league’s top quarterbacks with any extension, but the Lions appear ready to commit after two excellent seasons.
