Lions defensive end Willie Young suffered a nasty finger injury last month in Detroit’s November 18th game against the Packers.  During an attempted tackle of Green Bay running back James Starks, Young’s left middle finger was sliced at the top knuckle, with the resulting cut being so deep that nerves were severed and the bone was exposed  At the time Young knew it was bad but decided to leave his glove on, keep playing, and deal with the finger later. Said Young… “I refused to look at it,” he said. “I said we will worry about it when the game is over. When I did take that glove off, this is not what I was expecting to see. But this is what I have to deal with.” This is what the Lions defensive end saw when he finally did the big reveal following the game (warning, very grotesque injury ahead)… I don’t know about you all, but I’m officially grossed out. Since stitches weren’t an option because of how deep the gash was, Young seriously considered amputating the mangled digit, a la Ronnie Lott circa 1986, but instead chose to treat his finger with nothing more than some disinfectants and his superhuman pain tolerance. Young hasn’t missed a game or practice since the suffering the grisly injury, which is amazing when you hear just how high he rates the pain in his finger… How bad is the pain? “On a scale of one to ten,” he said, “nine point nine, nine, nine, nine.” And to think, some people call in sick to their office jobs because of a hangnail.
