TEAMS: Detroit Lions
Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has indicated that they’re going to look to extend quarterback Mathew Stafford’s contract. Stafford’s contract will reportedly eat up $20 million under the Lions’ cap for next season.  If they extend his contract, they’ll create more cap room. “My thought on that is that we’re going to try to extend him,” said Stafford, per DetroitLions.com. “There hasn’t been a whole lot of dialogue about it at this point, but I think that’s coming.” Mayhew knows it’s not going to be easy to sign Stafford to an extension. “It’s never easy,” Mayhew said of extending good players like Stafford. “You’re talking about a quarterback that’s your starter, that’s a quality player, that’s a talented guy and I think one of the better young quarterbacks in the NFL. “So it’ll be a challenge. But most of them, for good players, they’re a challenge. The easy (contracts), usually (those players) aren’t that good.” After a rough 2012 season it’s interesting that the Lions want to extend Stafford’s contract.  But then again, they really don’t have a choice.  His current contract doesn’t run out until 2017 and he gives them the best chance to win right now.   Need NFL Tickets? var _CI = _CI || {}; (function() { var script = document.createElement('script'); ref = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; _CI.counter = (_CI.counter) ? _CI.counter + 1 : 1; document.write(''); script.type = 'text/javascript'; var _CI = _CI || {}; (function() { var script = document.createElement('script'); ref = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; _CI.counter = (_CI.counter) ? _CI.counter + 1 : 1; document.write(''); script.type = 'text/javascript'; script.src = 'http://widget.crowdignite.com/widgets/27484?_ci_wid=_CI_widget_'+_CI.counter; script.async = true; ref.parentNode.insertBefore(script, ref); })();
