After edging out a win last weekend against the St. Louis Rams, the 1-0 Lions head west to take on the San Francisco 49ers who looked very impressive last Sunday in a 30-22 win over the Green Bay Packers. Now despite both teams entering this game 1-0, both teams appear to be in very different places amongst the rest of the NFC. With the Lions needing a drive in the final minutes to beat one of the bottom feeders of the NFC, the 49ers dominated a 15-1 Packers team last year that were Super Bowl favorites all season. However all things considered, tonight’s game isn’t a slam dunk for NFC powerhouse Niners. Many pieces on that San Francisco offense, namely Alex Smith aren’t world beaters while the Detroit offense is extremely dangerous with Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. In the end it may come down to how good the Niners defense can be and how much Smith can take advantage of a weak Lions secondary. Bottom line, today’s matchup is more or less a measuring stick game for a Lions t...

A fan wandered into Alex Smith’s postgame interview last night

Alex Smith put on a show Sunday night in the 49ers 27-19 win over the Lions. Smith went 20-31 for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Because of his performance he was given the chance to speak with NBC’s Michelle Tafoya. Smith was joined by teammate Michael Crabtree, which isn’t so out of the ordinary. But what was out of the ordinary was that a man in a hoodie also decided that...

Alex Smith Holds a 49ers Record That Joe Montana and Steve Young Can't Touch

Name the 49ers quarterback who has thrown the most consecutive passes without an interception. Joe Montana? Wrong. Steve Young? Also wrong. The record-holder is none other than the current, much-maligned San Francisco quarterback. Alex Smith marked his 185th regular-season attempt without a pick Sunday, setting the new record. Young held the record for the 49ers going into Sunday...

49ers sitting at 2 and 0 after win over Lions

The Lions came into Candlestick and left with a L. The 49ers beat the Lions 27-19 and Alex Smith showed again that he is more than just a game manager. Alex Smith finished the day 20-31 for 226 and 2 touchdowns and outplayed Matthew Stafford, who the 49ers made look like a backup. Stafford came into the game throwing over 350 yards for five consecutive games. Today he left with 230...

Sunday Night Football: Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers Preview and Prediction

A week after taking down the Packers, the San Francisco 49ers welcome the Detroit Lions to the Bay Area. The Lions also won their opener, over St. Louis, but it was a struggle for Matt Stafford and the Lions. Stafford threw three interceptions last week compared to zero by Alex Smith, though it is, of course, foolish to form judgements after one week of football. This game is a...

49ers defense silences Lions offensive attack

There were no handshake incidents this time around only a San Francisco defense standing tall in a 27-19 victory over the Detroit Lions Sunday night. The Lions’ vaunted pass offense was silenced by the San Francisco secondary as they held Calvin Johnson to eight catches for 94 yards and no touchdowns. And instead of relying on his number one target quarterback Matthew Stafford...

Lions denied by stingy 49ers defense

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The San Francisco 49ers stymied 2011 NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers in Week 1, then record-setting Matthew Stafford in Week 2. This stingy, opportunistic defense is again making its mark as one of the league's best facing the top offenses and most prolific passers -- and that you can shake on. The Niners denied Stafford another milestone, Vernon Davis caught touchdown...

Lions still struggling against NFL's elite

With a chance to take over sole possession of first place in the NFC North, the Detroit Lions had a hard time putting the ball in the end zone against San Francisco's tough defense. The 27-19 loss to the 49ers on Sunday night raised more questions about whether Detroit belongs among the NFL's elite. Last season, the Lions won 10 games, but none of their victories was against...

49ers could be the new NFC favorite

Last week, the 49ers were able to hold off the Green Bay Packers, securing a win that could very possibly turn into a tie-breaker at the end of the season. With a win against the Lions at home, the 49ers could establish themselves as the team to beat in the NFC. This game is intriguing for a number of different reasons. The Lions have a very explosive defense, but their...

Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers NFL Week 2 Preview

http://www.onlinesportfreaks.com/top-5-linebackers-nfl/ Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz….Handshake Part II could be really interesting! Meanwhile, Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions were one of the biggest locks to win in the season opener and they very nearly blew their opportunity at home against the St. Louis Rams. The Rams do not possess a ton of talent offensively, and...

Know Your Enemy - Lions vs. 49ers

LIONS vs. 49ers (Sept 16 8:20 PM ET) Could the 49ers look any better in Week 1? I do no think so, as they beat the Packers in Green Bay and they looked fantastic on both sides of the ball. Alex Smith outplayed Aaron Rodgers and the 49ers may have an offense that may stack up with their stacked defense. The Lions won their season opener and while Matt Stafford passed for 355...

49ers vs. Lions: Thumbs up and thumbs down

Which way does the thumb turn for the 49ers after their 27-19 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, including Alex Smith driving with blood dripping in crunch time, turning over a chance at NFL history, losing the battle of cheap shots, Vernon Davis’ post-TD jump shots, Dashon Goldson’s sticky mitts in center field, WRs Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham and much...

NFL Week 2: Detroit vs San Francisco Recap

SAN FRANCISCO (27) d DETROIT (19) The Headline: Niners put the rest of the NFL on notice The Story: Whoever said this was now a total passing league did not count on the 49ers coming back and playing some good old fashioned smash mouth football and looking incredibly good doing it. While the final score will only reflect an eight point margin anyone who watched the game will know...
