Matthew Stafford is holding out hope that he'll play against Denver on Sunday, but there are no guarantees. Stafford's right ankle was sprained when he was hit on the Lions' final offensive play in last Sunday's loss to the Atlanta Falcons. In a radio interview on NewsTalk 760 WJR in Detroit Tuesday afternoon, Stafford said he doesn't know if he will be ready to start against the Broncos. "I can't put a percentage on it," Stafford said. "I've got to take it day by day, see how it's doing if I can move around and go out and play." Stafford was hit on his right lower leg as he rolled left to throw a pass, which fell incomplete. He had his foot in a boot Sunday night and has been taking treatment. If Stafford can't play, Shaun Hill will start. Stafford did not say if he will be able to practice when the Lions begin drills Wednesday to prepare for Sunday's game. Stafford was asked to describe the nature of the injury. "Just a sprain, I guess," he said. "It's kind of in a weird spot. We're treating it, doing the best we can, to get it as healthy as possible for a chance to play this week." Stafford has been hit hard by the injury jinx in his three seasons with the Lions. He missed six starts as a rookie in 2009 because of injuries to his right knee and left shoulder. He played only three games in 2010 because of two injuries to his right (throwing) shoulder. Until the injury Sunday, Stafford has been healthy and has played pretty well this season. Stafford has 16 touchdown passes against four interceptions in the first seven games. He ranks sixth in the league with a passer rating of 95.5.
