The Pittsburgh Steelers have made it abundantly clear throught the 2023 offseason that they are hoping to run the football effectively in 2023. With an improved offensive line and an immensely talented duo at running back, the team has positioned themselves nicely to return to the "glory days" of Steelers football, which consisted of pounding the rock and getting after the quarterback. Both seem to be achievable goals this upcoming season. With that being said, the question remains as to who will round out the running back group behind Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren.

The third-string running back job may seem unimportant considering the current situation with their top two running backs. However, as the 2022 season proved, having quality depth at ball carrier is critical in terms of offensive success. During a Week 12 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, both Harris and Warren were sidelined due to injury, which forced reserve players Benny Snell and Anthony McFarland Jr. into action.

Not only did these two players hold their own, but they made some big-time plays which allowed the Steelers to win the game by a score of 24-17. Snell was especially impressive, racking up 62 yards on 12 carries and a rushing touchdown

Who Will Win The Steelers' RB3 Competition In 2023?

With Snell likely looking for a fresh start elsewhere in 2023, the Steelers will be searching for a new RB3. While it is entirely possible that the Steelers look to the free agent market to fill this role, it is looking like the organization is comfortable enough with their internal options of McFarland, Jason Huntley, Alfonzo Graham and Darius Hagans. Needless to say, most are not exactly household names. However, the same could have been said in 2022. Fortunately, Warren quickly made a name for himself and is now in the conversation of best backup running backs in the entire league.

All of the Steelers' options at third-string running back have their own unique talents, but there seems to be one common characteristic among all them - lack of size. The trio of McFarland, Graham and Huntley are all less than 200 pounds, as pointed out by steelers.com writer, Dale Lolley during his most recent edition of "5 for Friday." The only player over 200 pounds is Hagans, who may end up being more of a threat to make the 53-man roster than what many people realize.

"Hagans is one on which to keep an eye. While the smaller backs are all slightly faster than the former Virginia State star, Hagans is no slouch when it comes to speed. He ran a 4.48-second 40-yard dash at the HCBU Combine in the spring," said Lolley.

Hagans' Impressive Combination Of Size And Speed May Help Him Stand Out In Training Camp

Assuming Harris and Warren remain healthy in 2023, the RB3 will hardly ever see the field offensively. For instance, Snell only had 20 total rushing attempts in 2022, which included 12 in one game. Needless to say, whoever ends up occupying the role in 2023 will need to willing and able to contribute on special teams.

This is where Hagans may have an edge over his competition. If he proves to provide the same type of value on special teams as Snell, he may end up being the second undrafted rookie running back to make the team in consecutive seasons as Warren did so in 2022. Training camp will undoubtedly serve as the perfect opportunity for Hagans to do so. Get ready, SteelerNation. It will be here before you know it!

Thoughts, Steeler Nation?

Do you believe Hagans is a legitimate candidate to make the 53-man roster? What other running running backs are you excited to watch in training camp? Do you think the Steelers will add a free agent ball carrier before the regular season starts?
