LT George Fant heading to IR
Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

For the New York Jets at offensive tackle, the hits just keep on coming. Yesterday afternoon, it was confirmed that seventh-year veteran, George Fant will be designated to the injured reserve list. Fant is eligible to return to play for the Jets in Week 8.

In correspondence with the Fant update, the Jets had to pivot. Along with signing Mike Remmers Monday night, yesterday, the Jets signed Cedric Ogbuehi to the active roster. He was with the Houston Texans on their practice squad.

Who will the New York Jets plug in to supplement loss of George Fant?

It remains to be seen who starts in place of Fant at left tackle for the foreseeable future. The three options are Conor McDermott, Remmers, and Ogbuehi.

Ogbuehi is 30 years old and in his eighth NFL season. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals as a first-round pick in 2015. Ogbuehi has played in 60 and started 30 games over his career.

The Fant injury follows a few others for the Jets at offensive tackle. Dating back to the summer, early on in training camp, it was Mekhi Becton who suffered a season-ending injury. Shortly before the start of the regular season, Duane Brown sustained an injury and landed on injured reserve. Now, just three weeks into the year, Fant winds up on the four-week injured reserve list with a knee injury.

Ultimately, Fant was likely playing through pain and deserves credit if so. He had surgery in January and missed most of the off-season work. The team needed him, and he battled. Hopefully, he heals up and returns soon.

Lastly, it is worth noting that Brown is eligible to return from injured reserve following this week’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the position now being a huge concern, it would be ideal for Brown to be available for Week 5.
