Here’s a rather odd story from this past Friday night involving Bears WR/KR Devin Hester and a 52-year-old gentleman who thought it a wise move to slap the NFL star upside the back of the head when he ran into him at Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Hester was standing in line awaiting a cash transaction when out of the blue Daniel G. Rago slapped the Chicago speedster in the back of head and walked away.  Motive?  None that was obvious, other than Rago felt the urge to completely ignore every ounce of common sense he possesses.  Smacking a stranger in the noggin is generally frowned upon within the walls of a casino, even moreso when said stranger closely resembles a 5-foot-11, 190-pound football player with speed to burn.

Hester notified casino security about the incident, and they detained Rago until police showed up and arrested the 52-year-old.

From the Trib Local…

Hester was in a cash transaction line at around 10:40 p.m. Friday when Daniel G. Rago, 52, of the 200 block of Wille Street in Mount Prospect, approached the football player, slapped him in the back of the head and walked away, Des Plaines Police Chief Jim Prandini said.

After Hester notified the casino’s security team, Rago was escorted to a holding area and later arrested by Des Plaines police.

Prandini said Rago did not explain his reasons for the alleged slap to police. Prandini added that Hester was “very professional” during the incident, noting Hester did not retaliate and asked to sign complaints against Rago.

Kudos to Devin Hester for taking the high road and not retaliating, even though the situation warranted a beatdown the likes of which I’m sure Daniel Rago has never seen before.

But why slap Hester in the first place?  Wouldn’t it make more sense to slap one of the coaches and/or punters who still flirt with disaster and continue kicking to the game’s best return man?
