Conventional wisdom might tell you that a Super Bowl hero signing with the 49ers, just days after singing the best receiver of the last 14-years to a contract,  could be enough to lure a an MVP QB to your team.  That isn’t the case with Peyton Manning.

Late last night, former New York Giants WR Mario Manningham signed a 2-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers.  Manninghan, who caught a TD in this years NFC Championship Game against the 9ers, will join Moss and Vernon Davis as receiving targets for the a QB TBA. As it stands, San Fran is without a QB, as they pursue Manning while former 1st round draft pick Alex Smith continues to live in purgatory.

Manningham is a receiver that has flashes of excitement.  He has quickness and speed that QBs love in their receivers, but unfortunately, he also is a terrible route runner, and has bad field awareness (Super Bowl catch withstanding).  He often was on the wrong page with Eli in New York, running incorrect routes, and failing to know where the sideline was on many occasions.   Peyton, like his brother Eli, like to have a connection with their receivers, where they can read a defense and communicate with one another to know what route to run if the coverage is not what the initial play called for.  Manningham does to not excel at that.  What Manningham does bring is speed and shiftiness.  He can turn a short yardage reception into big yards.  He has a knack for getting behind defensive backs, as well.   But one needs to look at the Giants lack of effort in contract negotiations to realize that he was expendable. Is he an upgrade with what they have?  We will find out real quick.

Peyton hasn’t given an indication to where he is leaning.  Many different people have spoken out believing that he will sign with the Titans, or with the Broncos, or with the 49ers.  There is nothing out there to lead us to a conclusion.  The 49ers would make the most sense, in terms of ability to win, right now. But that has little to do with the signing of Manningham.  That’s not to say he won’t be a weapon if Peyton signs.   But Peyton could turn Michael Crabtree into the big time threat that 9ers thought he could be when they drafted him in the 1st round in 2010. Pierre Garcon just signed a nice deal with the Redskins because of the numbers he was able to put up with Peyton throwing it to them.  It wasn’t because who was playing WR that the 9ers struggled to throw the ball in the NFC Championship Game, it was because who was throwing it, and a defense that was relentless.  But with Peyton back there, he will make sure that the guys on the outside get it, no matter who he is throwing it to.
