Going into training camp, the San Diego Chargers have been using cornerback Marcus Gilchrist to fill in at strong safety while Brandon Taylor rehabs a torn ACL. According to his defensive coordinator, John Pagano, Gilchrist has been doing much better than just filling in. On an interview with Darren Smith on the Mighty 1090, Pagano says Gilchrist’s “transformation to safety has been outstanding. He’s going to fit into what we’re trying to do” The team hasn’t had a solid strong safety since Rodney Harrison departed for New England. The Chargers drafted LSU’s Taylor in last year’s draft but he ultimately tore his ACL towards the end of his rookie season in his first start in a game against the New York Jets. Need NFL Tickets? The San Diego Chargers have signed rookie free-agent safety Tony Burnett of Southern California and waived rookie quarterback Mark Hermann.
The Chargers also waived-injured cornerback Kenny Okoro. If Okoro clears waivers, he will be placed on injured reserve.
Burnett was an honorable mention all-Pac-12 pick as a senior in 2012 after recording 28 tackles and an interception.
The San Diego Chargers have signed undrafted rookie safety Tony Burnett, the team announced on Tuesday.
The corresponding move sees the team waiving injured rookie cornerback Kenny Okoro and quarterback Mike Hermann.
Burnett worked out for the team after he went undrafted but was ultimately unsigned. He spent his collegiate years at Southern Cal.
