The Jacksonville Jaguars will meet with Marcus Trufant today in an effort to possibly sign the veteran defensive back to a contract.Trufant, 32, has been a member of the Seattle Seahawks since being drafted by the team back in 2003. He made the Pro Bowl in 2007.The Jaguars, who cut most of their starting secondary once free agency began this offseason, drafted five defensive backs in April’s NFL Draft and signed Alan Ball away from rival Houston to play to compete for one of the open cornerback positions. The Jaguars are counting on second round draft pick, safety Jonathan Cyprien, to start at one of the safety positions, while third round pick, Dwayne Gratz, is expected to compete for one of the other open defensive back slots. Dwight Lowery will again be manning the secondary in teal and black. The Jaguars have purged most of their roster. Twenty-nine players who were playing here in 2012-13 are no longer on the roster. It is a movement general manager David Caldwell and new head coach Gus Bradley began once they started with the team in January.Popular players like Rashean Mathis, Greg Jones, Dawan Landry and Terrance Knighton were shown the door. The Jaguars wanted a team of younger, faster players that could grow within the franchise. leading to playoff wins and a hopefully Super Bowl appearance.Ironically Trufant, a Washington State star, was a name mentioned by the Jaguars as a player of interest when they were drafting in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft. The Jaguars selected quarterback Byron Leftwich with the seventh selection, Trufant was taken five picks later. It was also the year the Jaguars selected Mathis in the second round out of Bethune Cookman.I like the idea of seeing more players who are familiar with Bradley’s defensw coming to Jacksonville to implement the system. Trufant may not be an every-down defensive back anymore, but he provides coverage skills and leadership this team could use. If he were to sign here in Florida, does it mean the Jaguars will target other veterans to come in and fill roster spots? There are plenty of remaining free agents who could be a welcomed addition to this franchise if the Jaguars were to go that route.
