Marques Colston is the best pick at wide receiver the Saints have ever made by quite a large margin. Only three players were selected after Colston in the entire 2006 draft, none of whom are still on a NFL roster. At 6-foot-4 and nearly 230 lbs., the Saints saw potential in this Hofstra grad. They figured he would at least create competition at the wide receiver position; what they received was a game-changing, Pro-Bowl-caliber wide out for years to come (despite being snubbed for a spot on the Pro Bowl roster thus far in his career). Colston hit the ground running, breaking the 1,000 yard receiving mark in his rookie season and scoring eight touchdowns. Since then he’s only been under 1,000 yards for a season twice, and both sub-1,000 yard campaigns were hindered by injury. What’s more, Colston was as important a piece to the Saints Super Bowl run as any. In the 2009 playoffs he caught 15 passes for nearly 200 yards and a touchdown on the way to New Orleans’ first championship victory. As far as competition for the title of ‘best drafted wide receiver’, there really isn’t a lot. The most recent wide receiver picks in the first round for the Saints were Robert Meachem and Donte Stallworth, both of whom never lived up to potential. Kenny Stills had a great rookie year, yet he barely even scratched the surface of what Colston was able to accomplish. Colston is consistently one of the most underrated receivers in the league for two reasons. First, he plays in a system designed to spread the ball to numerous targets and the quarterback pulling the trigger just so happens to be one of the best in the business in spreading the wealth. The second is his reserved, quiet personality. He’s never been the ‘look at me!’ type of wide receiver (a breath of fresh air after the antics of Joe Horn), playing the game with the blue-collar mentality of showing up and doing your job without a lot of extracurricular activity. Because of that he often gets lost behind the pandering of guys that may be less skilled yet more talkative (i.e. Steve Smith, Desean Jackson). Colston now receives (a modicum of) the praise he deserves, earning our nod as the best Saints wide receiver draft selection of all time.
