When the Eagles scooped up Matt Barkley in the fourth-round of last month's draft, the prevailing thought was he'd hold a clipboard for a few seasons.

However, the former Trojan's time could be coming sooner than later.

Jeff McClane of the Philadelphia Inquirer thinks there's "no reason" why Barkley can't win the Eagles' starting quarterback job this season.

McClane came to this conclusion based on various reasons, including Barkley's accuracy, ability to throw on the run, and perhaps most importantly, the advantage of being handpicked by new coach Chip Kelly.

Upon Kelly's arrival in Philadelphia, he was saddled with Michael Vick and Nick Foles, two holdover signal-callers from the Andy Reid era. And they haven't exactly been given ringing endorsements; Vick was brought back on a meager one-year contract, and Foles has reportedly been on the trade block this offseason.

Barkley's draft-day free-fall landed him in Kelly's lap, a scenario "virtually no one" thought was possible. The same would certainly be said if Barkley takes the first snap from under center on Opening Day. But crazier things have happened, and it shouldn't be put past Kelly to make such a bold imprint in his first year on the job.
