Matthew Stafford is in the midst of his fifth year as the Detroit Lions starting quarterback.  In one of the five years, his second, he only played two full games and part of a third before missing rest of the season with surgery to repair his AC joint and his clavicle in his throwing shoulder. In his tenth game of his fifth season, Sunday, he overtook Bobby Layne as the Lions all-time leading passer.  Stafford through for 362 yards which gives him 16,005 total yards at the time of this post.  Layne threw for 15,710 yards in his nine seasons as the Lions quarterback from 1950-1958. via footballdb.com Yes, no other Lions quarterback had Calvin Johnson. But Calvin Johnson didn’t make all-world quarterbacks out of Jon Kitna (eighth on the list), Dan Orlovsky and Daunte Culpepper in the two years prior to Stafford’s existence in the organization. It takes a decent QB to get him the ball. It’s quite an accomplishment. And you have to figure that with Stafford being signed through 2017 (with the possibility of being a lifetime Lion), he’s going to put pretty severe padding between him and the field. For those of you that cursed him and wanted him gone during his first two injury-plagued seasons, you’re lucky the organization didn’t listen to you. You shouldn’t need these stats to tell you that Matthew Stafford should be the Lions quarterback.
