Geoff Mosher of The News Journal reports that much maligned Eagles linebacker Casey Matthews will replace Jamar Chaney in the team’s nickel packages this week against the Dolphins.
The move makes sense on several levels. Matthews was thrown into an impossible situation and failed miserably as a starting linebacker over the first couple weeks of the season. He was then moved to outside linebacker, thought to be a more natural fit for the rookie, but it didn’t matter. Matthews hit rock bottom when New York running back Brandon Jacobs torched Matthews on a wheel route for a 40-yard touchdown in the Eagles Week 3 loss to the Giants. This can't happen anymore.
It was at that point in became obvious the Eagles couldn’t move forward with Matthews on the field if they wished to contend. Fortunately for Matthews, the Eagles didn’t contend even while he was on the bench, so he’s going to get another shot to prove himself.
