What’s the most humiliating product a football player could possibly endorse? That’s Depends. Yet the adult diaper found a way to cross into the mainstream (no pun intended) in a new commercial featuring Pro Bowlers Clay Matthews, DeMarcus Ware and Wes Welker. ANNOUNCER GUY: Now I know you don’t need them, but would you try these on for charity and prove how great the fit is? WARE: Seriously? MATTHEWS: No way. WELKER: For charity? Let’s do it! And they are off to the locker room to try on the new Depend Real Fit — looks and feels like underwear instead of a diaper, so no one will know you’re wearing it until you piss yourself! I will say that this commercial is exceedingly well-written. Matthews and Ware are bound to catch a lot of crap (no pun intended) for doing this ad, but now their character arc allows for them to say “We weren’t going to, but Welker guilted us into it!” And Welker can say “I’m such a generous guy, I’ll gladly wear an adult diaper for a good cause!” The commercial doesn’t make it clear which charity earned these donations, though for the amount of money it would take three football players to wear diapers hopefully AIDS or starvation or some other horrible thing will be eradicated by next month. I like this concept from an advertising perspective, though Depend missed the mark of true marketing genius by not going for the one guy in the NFL known for pissing down his leg in clutch situations: Tony Romo.
