The Official LA Galaxy Myspace:
What has happened to the San Diego Chargers? I'll admit that I was first in line for the firing of Marty Schottenheimer after last year's horrible playoff loss to the Patriots, and that no one could convince me otherwise that he wasn't the reason for their playoff woes. However, as I watch this young, fast, talented team jump off to a 1-2 start the only thing that keeps running through my head is Norv Turner's lack of motivation. This team has looked uninspired, and except for a few series at home against the Bears the squad appears confused. Now LT is yelling at Philip Rivers and the defense can't get to the quarterback, just what in the world is going on here?
I know that the change in both offensive and defensive coordinators is a huge one to undertake in just one off-season, but the offense is running virtually the same playbook and the defense has 10 returning starters. It must be a case of lack of motivation. The last thing you ever had to worry about with Marty ball is that the players wouldn't be ready to go on Sundays. Now with Turner, it seems that the Bolts show up thinking they've already won the game on paper or are too intimidating for the other team. Instead other teams now are using the 14-2 record of last years Chargers as their own motivation and coming after them each week. San Diego is no longer sneaking up on a team that's for sure.
I thought that after a week one victory over Chicago the media didn't give the Chargers defense enough credit for man handling Rex Grossman and the Bears attack. But now after seeing the Bears attack against other teams in the last two weeks, I'm starting to think that this is just a case of another Superbowl runner up having a down year the season after dropping the big game.
In week two I watched as the Chargers got destroyed by a well coached, well disciplined, and much more focused New England team. It was supposed to be San Diego's revenge game and the Patriots were even going through media coverage of "Spy Gate", yet the Pat's defense still made Turner's offense look more like San Diego State than the "Super" Chargers.
Week three is now in the books and veteran Brett Farve out dueled the young Rivers at Lambeau. LT is frustrated and the Bolt's secondary is just, well, "secondary". So the question is, can this team come together and win despite Turner and his new coordinators, or will they let dissention hit the locker room and return to being the Chargers of old?
If things continue like this, can we expect a mid season Head Coaching change?
