Last season, the Buffalo Bills received plenty of criticism after claiming linebacker Shawne Merriman off waivers from the San Diego Chargers–mainly because they picked up what was left of his $3.27 million contract and he didn’t even suit up once for the team in 2010. Even when the Bills signed Merriman to a two-year deal during the offseason and agree to pay him a little over $5 million each season, they were still taking heat since the former Pro Bowler has been limited to just 18 games over the last three seasons. However, it’s the Bills who may get the last laugh if Saturday’s opening preseason game against the Chicago Bears is any indication of what to expect from Merriman this upcoming season. Despite their 10-3 loss, the Bills have to be pleased that Merriman recorded two of the team’s nine sacks to go along with three tackles and even helped rookie Marcell Darius record his first sack when going after Jay Cutler.
