Mark Sanchez's day was over, benched for the first time in his NFL career and his status as the New York Jets' starting quarterback suddenly uncertain. Tim Tebow was expected to be the biggest threat to Sanchez's job. Turns out, it might be third-stringer Greg McElroy. McElroy threw a touchdown pass to cap his first NFL drive early in the fourth quarter, leading New York to an ugly 7-6 victory Sunday and sending the Arizona Cardinals to their eighth straight loss. ''It was fun,'' said McElroy, the team's seventh-round pick last year out of Alabama. ''We were having a good time. It was exciting to get a shot and go in there.'' Well, he might get another next week at Jacksonville. Rex Ryan must decide this week whether he'll give Sanchez another shot as the Jets' starting quarterback, see what the team has in McElroy or go with Tebow, who could make his homecoming against the Jaguars if he's healthy enough. Greg McElroy Throws TD On First Drive After Replacing Sanchez

The Jets had about enough of Mark Sanchez on Sunday and chose to go with Greg McElroy midway through the third quarter. As McElroy got ready to enter the game the Jets ‘faithful’ gave one of the loudest standing ovations of the entire year. Sanchez was 10/21 with 97 yards and three interceptions at the time of his yanking.  So how did the rookie fare in his first drive? ...

Mark Sanchez benched for Greg McElroy

Mark Sanchez played so poorly on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals that the New York Jets decided to finally replace him at quarterback. They didn’t send in Tim Tebow to take his spot, but second-year quarterback Greg McElroy. McElroy was a seventh-round pick by the team last year from Alabama where he won a national championship. He was activated on gameday Sunday for the first...

Jets win with Greg McElroy at QB, Sanchez benched after 3 INT

It is not a good sign for Mark Sanchez. After the quarterback was pulled during a 10-of-21 three interception performance against Arizona, his understudy led the New York Jets to an ugly win. Greg McElroy was inserted into the game for the Jets following the benching of Sanchez. McElroy got the call into the game as backup Tim Tebow was inactive as he deals with a rib injury. On...

Braylon Edwards backs Sanchez: Blames 'idiots calling shots' for problems

A former Jets player who helped Mark Sanchez through the first two years of his NFL career has come out and said the benched quarterback is not to blame for the team's current struggles. Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who spent most of 2009 and all of 2010 as Sanchez's main target with the Jets, posted to his Twitter account early Tuesday morning: "...

Braylon Edwards Says ‘Idiots Calling Shots’ Are to Blame for Jets’ Problems, Not Mark Sanchez

Most people in the known world consider themselves experts on the mess that is the New York Jets. The criticism has been far-reaching and heavy this year as the team has fallen to 5-7. But Braylon Edwards seems to think he has the proper credentials for more potshots against the team, considering he played there for part of the 2009 season and all of 2010. Edwards sent a tweet early...

Jets 7, Cardinals 6

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Greg McElroy made his NFL debut after Mark Sanchez was benched following three miserable quarters and capped his first drive with a one-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Cumberland on the first play of the fourth quarter as the New York Jets edged the Arizona Cardinals, 7-6, in a remarkable battle of offensive ineptitude Sunday afternoon. McElroy went 5-for-7...
