Potential top NHL draft choice and nephew of Donovan McNabb, Darnell Nurse says his uncle has offered him plenty of advice on the draft (Credit: TheSchoolPhilly.com)
Former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb’s nephew, Darnell Nurse, is expected to be a top pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. Despite being drafted by a different league, McNabb has been offering advise to Nurse on the drafting process. Nurse says McNabb has been a huge help as he prepares for the draft and life in the NHL.
“He’s been one of the best people in my life to go to for advice,” Nurse said of McNabb, via Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News. “He’s been a big influence in my life. I think anyone who has a family member in sports faces the same thing.
“But at the same time, it’s a different sport and I’m trying to do my thing so that at some point, my sister’s kids will be asking about me.”
Nurse added that he tried to get McNabb into some skates but has yet to get him on the ice.
“I’ve tried to get him on skates, but he won’t budge,” Nurse said. “That’s the next step.”
Because McNabb is Nurse’s uncle he has visited Philadelphia to catch a number of games. Nurse also told the Philadelphia Daily News that he would love to be drafted by the Flyers because of the city’s fans.
“I loved it there,” Nurse said. “The fans are crazy. But I think that’s the best part of the city – that they’re crazy about their sports. They’re going to let you know when you don’t do so well. I think my uncle is a prime example of that.
“But at the same time, you get a lot of respect for success. If I had the opportunity to go there, that’s the kind of market you want to play in.”
While McNabb and Nurse play in two different leagues, I am sure McNabb still has plenty of advice he can offer to his nephew.
It definitely would be cool to see Nurse be drafted by the Flyers at number 11 and play in the same city as his uncle.

When the Minnesota Vikings signed Jerome Simpson before the 2012 season, I wasn't alone when I thought, "Him? Does he like Mayon-eggs?" And then he was mostly hurt last year, dropped a lot of passes, and remained unspectacular (outside of his AMAZING hip thrust celebration). Then the Vikings signed him again this offseason and I laughed because I thought it was a joke...
