I watched the NFL Network re-air the Bengals deliver the knock-out blow to the Steelers Wednesday night. The game was just as fun the second time, but far less stressful. During a commercial break, I saw NFLN’s blurb covering the QBs named to the Pro Bowl. (Because, you know, we fans care only about quarterbacks, right?) Honest to God, this is no joke. Whoever wrote the script for the story had the audacity to describe RG3 as coming from the “hyper-competitive NFC East”. The guy reading the script actually read it completely straight, too. Not even a hint of a snicker. How he did it, I’ll never know. Hyper-competitive? A division that may not have a 10-game winner? Child, please. I get it. Most of these media chuckle-heads live on the East Coast and root for one of those teams. And everybody wants to think that their favorite team plays in the toughest division in their conference, if not in all of football. So the myth easily takes shape. The stuff-shirt talking heads would earn some credibility with me if they would actually admit that the NFC East isn’t very good this year. Every division has down years. But they can’t do it. Probably because they might have to admit that playing the AFC North could have had something to do with it. Look, media types, I’ll make a deal with you. Talk about the Redskins and your new darling, RG3. He’s good. We like him, too, even though we will burn out on him long before you will. It’s good to see a team rebound, and I’m good with that. But you’ve got to shut up about the rest of the mediocre-to-poor NFC East. We don’t care who is going to replace Andy Reid. We don’t care how the Giants’ defense will get their mojo back. We aren’t all that interested in where Michael Vick might end up. We’ll care for a few minutes once some team signs him, but that’s it. There are 26 other teams not named the Giants, the Cowboys, the Eagles, the Packers, the Patriots or the Steelers. Talk about some of them for a while. Some of them actually have interesting story lines going on, too. For the love of Mike, please just shut up about the NFC East.
