Tim Dobbins hasn’t practiced since injuring his right ankle on Monday night, and that probably means we won’t see the inside linebacker make his Miami Dolphins debut until the second preseason game at the earliest.
That leaves a window of opportunity for a pair of seventh-round picks at inside linebacker: J.D. Folsom (2009) and Austin Spitler (2010).
Considering the Dolphins only kept three inside linebackers out of training camp last year — Channing Crowder, Akin Ayodele and Reggie Torbor — guys like Folsom and Spitler are probably only competing for a crack at the practice squad.
But with the season-ending knee injury to fourth-rounder A.J. Edds, the need for a coverage specialist in third-down passing situations becomes more acute.
Can a healthy Dobbins handle the role as he begins a new chapter in his career after spending his first four years with the Chargers? That’s one of the questions I asked him in the video clip below.
