The great thing about the NFL is that there are so many positions that every year, there is almost always at least one player who has a breakout year on every team, no matter how good or bad the team is. This is one part in a 32 part segment detailing one potential breakout player for the 2012 NFL season on each NFL team. For the Miami Dolphins, that player is defensive end Jared Odrick. Jared Odrick, a collegiate defensive tackle, was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 1st round in 2010 and moved to defensive end in their 3-4 defense, better known as the five-technique position. Odrick’s rookie year basically ended before it started as he broke his leg in the opener after only 22 snaps and was put on IR. In 2011, however, Odrick came back healthy and started to show some of why he was such a highly drafted player as a rotational five-technique, mostly focusing on rushing the passer. On a crowded defensive line, Odrick played 597 snaps, 393 of which were pass rush snaps, and he ha...

Tannehill named Dolphins starter

The QB competition is over in Miami, at least for now, as the team has come out and said that their first round rookie will be under center week one.

Dolphins make statement by starting Tannehill

DAVIE, Fla. Ryan Tannehill isnt appreciably better than Matt Moore. Tannehill isnt appreciably better than David Garrard. That was never a requirement. Tannehill, the eighth pick of the draft, was named the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback on Monday because hes just as good as Moore and Garrard. That was the only standard he had to meet, and truth be told he slightly exceeded...

Philbin less than enthusiastic about Jonathan Martin

Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin wasn’t exactly supportive of 2nd-round pick Jonathan Martin after the rookie struggled against the Panthers: “He wasn’t God awful. Wasn’t like he got beat right off the bat. He had a bad holding call. A really bad holding call, and I thought he maybe could have got called for another one later.” Martin allowed two sacks and was called...

Starting Ryan Tannehill Not the Right Move, Could Ultimately Backfire on Miami Dolphins

A lot of pressure comes with being a first-round pick. The big money contracts -- although not nearly as big as in the past -- hold a hefty weight, the spotlight shines down on them like a solar eclipse, and maybe most importantly they are relentlessly scrutinized at every twist and turn. Especially quarterbacks. So after being selected No. 8 overall in this past April's NFL...

Philbin on naming starting QB: “it could be this week”

The Dolphins headed into camp with three QBs vying for the top spot, and now it’s down to just two after David Garrard injured his knee and a timetable for his return is uncertain. Ryan Tannehill and Matt Moore will both look to make Philbin’s decision a little easier when they host the Atlanta Falcons Friday night. "It could be [this week]," Philbin told the Sun...

Dolphins name Ryan Tannehill starting quarterback

Though it looked like a long shot at the beginning of the preseason, the Dolphins have named Ryan Tannehill, the 8th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, their starting quarterback. Tannehill entered the preseason as the 3rd string quarterback behind Matt Moore and David Garrard and looked like a long shot for the starting job. Best case scenario for Tannehill looked like that he...

Miami Dolphins name rookie QB Ryan Tannehill the starting quarterback

In a move which does not surprise me in the least, the Miami Dolphins have announced this afternoon that rookie QB Ryan Tannehill will be the starting signal caller for the regular season. During his Monday press conference, head coach Joe Philbin announced the move. Heading into this weekend’s game against the Carolina Panthers, the team named Tannehill the starter for that contest...

Can Joe Philbin Fix the Miami Dolphins?

Dating back to last season and a 6-10 finish, optimism reigned true with coaching search and plethora of coaching candidates that interviewed for the head coaching job in Miami.  As Joe Philbin was hired, many fans praised the hiring of an offensive football coach by Ireland in that the Dolphins were going to undergo a culture change for the better.  With Philbin being labeled...

The Miami Dolphins have their man. After a relatively brief competition with Matt Moore and David Garrard, Ryan Tannehill was officially named the Dolphins starting quarterback by head coach Joe Philbin on Monday. After Tannehill started the  ’Phins second preseason game and played relatively well, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Tannehill knows offensive coordinator...
