The Miami Dolphins have waived linebacker Tim Dobbins, cutting the six-year veteran the team’s decision makers signed to a contract extension during last year’s training camp.
The Dolphins waived Tim Dobbins to make room for a rookie.
Dobbins, who started six games last season, contributing 47 tackles and one sack, was due $1.7 million in 2011 in the final year of a two-year deal that guaranteed him $3 million.
Dobbins is the second inside linebacker the Dolphins have waived this week. Channing Crowder, the starter he replaced last season, was waived on Friday to create salary cap space.
It’s likely Dobbins, whom the team acquired in a trade with San Diego during the 2010 draft, got purged for the exact same reason.
To replace Dobbins the Dolphins signed Mark Masterson, a undrafted rookie free agent who played his college football at the University of Maine. Masterson is listed at 6-2, 240 pounds.
