After an 0-6 start and mishandling Josh Freeman, a former Buccaneers player says the team has lost respect for head coach Greg Schiano (Credit: Chicagonow.com) The Tampa Bay Buccaneers under head coach Greg Schiano have been nothing but a mess. Last year, the Bucs finished 7-9 and appeared to be ready to turn the corner into a legitimate playoff contender, especially with the emergence of Doug Martin. But as the off-season began, cracks in the facade started to appear as the tension between starting quarterback Josh Freeman and head coach Greg Schiano went public. Even with the lack of trust between the starting quarterback and head coach, the Buccaneers added corner back Darrelle Revis in the off-season and looked primed to contend for the NFC South. However, that was before Josh Freeman got off to a slow start and the disagreements between him and Schiano grew to a boiling point. After an 0-3 start, Tampa Bay chose to release Josh Freeman and start rookie quarterback Mike Glennon. With the team now 0-6, it looks as though Schiano may be on the hot seat and could be fired at the end of the season. One reason the Buccaneers may choose to fire Schiano at the end of the season is he has apparently lost the respect of the locker room. According to former Buccaneers’ defensive lineman Michael Bennett, Schiano tries to act tough, but has completely lost the respect of the team. “I think he just wants to flex his power,” Bennett said. “He has small [man's] syndrome. I still talk to guys who are there, and trust me, there’s not much respect for him in that locker room.” Bennett added that if Schiano could prove that his tough guy method worked, he would have the confidence of the team. “He’s trying to be Belichick,” Bennett said. “Yeah, some people think Belichick’s an [expletive], but he’s a legend. When this guy acts that way, it’s a whole different deal.” The Buccaneers play Carolina tonight, Seattle next week and then face off against Miami, Atlanta and Detroit. If Schiano falls to 0-10, you have to think the Buccaneers will decide to move on from Schiano, especially if he has lost the team’s respect.
