Denver’s offense will be seeking applicants for the soon to be vacated coordinator’s position, all because its 2nd ranked defense couldn’t contain the NFL’s 16th ranked offense.Mike McCoy - Denver’s current offensive coordinator - would still be off limits had Denver advanced to the championship round of the playoffs.They didn’t, so he isn’t.Chicago, Arizona and Philadelphia interviewed McCoy in Denver during Wild-Card Weekend when the Broncos had a bye. But he could not conduct a second interview until the bye week before the Super Bowl, or accept a job offer until after the Super Bowl, unless the Broncos were eliminated.Now he has visited with San Diego, and is at least rumored to be sought after by each of the remaining leaderless franchises: Chicago, Jacksonville, Arizona and Philadelphia.Peyton Manning is celebrated as the most cerebral quarterback of his generation. This casts doubt on how much impact McCoy really had on Denver’s offense this season, much as Tom Moore’s importance was always questioned in Indianapolis during Manning’s tenure.The true highlight of McCoy’s résumé is the way he managed the sudden transition from Kyle Orton to Tim Tebow in 2011. Tebowmania crushed Orton’s fragile psyche by Week 5 and Tebow was named the starter during the bye. But Tebow struggled running a traditional NFL offense and was exposed by Detroit’s defense with seven sacks, one lost fumble and one interception for a TD in a 45-10 mauling.After that Week 8 debacle, Denver installed the read option offense which Tebow excelled in at Florida and reverted to in his miraculous OT comeback against Miami in Week 7 -- aka: the Tebowing game.What followed were six straight mind-boggling victories that catapulted Denver to 8-5 and eventually their first AFC West championship in six seasons. That Denver lost four out of its next five is more a reflection of Tebow’s inability to pass accurately and keep a defense honest than schematic flaws by McCoy.Moore and current quarterback coach Adam Gase are on the short list of possible replacements when - not if - McCoy moves on.
