Mike Patterson has been named the 2011 Eagles recipient of the Ed Block Courage award for his battle with AVM and playing all season despite suffering a seizure on the fields on Lehigh University earlier this year.
Those that were on the field when Patterson went down will likely never forget that moment, as some players had tears running down their face as Patterson was put into the ambulance. Speculation arose that the former USC Trojan's career could be over, but after consulting with doctors, Patterson returned to the practice field only 17 days later.
“I’ve been associated with this award for my 19 years in the National Football League and Mike is one of the most deserving candidates that I have ever been around,” said head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder. “His courage to play with this condition and to put off any further procedures until the offseason shows his commitment to his teammates and to the Philadelphia Eagles.”
