DAVIE, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins locked up one of their defensive stalwarts Tuesday. It sounds like one of their top offensive players won't be a hard sell when the time comes. The Dolphins signed safety Reshad Jones to a four-year, 30 million contract extension. He's now under contract through the 2017 season. Miami center Mike Pouncey took special note of the signing since he and Jones have the same agent in Joel Segal. Pouncey becomes a free agent after next season, but it wouldn't be a surprise if the Dolphins look to lock up Pouncey long term before he steps on the field in 2014. It might not be hard. "I was drafted here. This is where my family lives," Pouncey, who attended high school in Lakeland, Fla., and starred at the University of Florida, told FOX Sports Florida at Miami's training camp. "So, obviously, I want to be a Dolphin for my whole career. ... This is exactly where I want to be." That's got to be good news for the Dolphins, who signed Pouncey to a four-year, 9.26 million contract after he was the No. 15 pick in the first round of the 2011 draft. NBC analyst Cris Collinsworth gushed about Pouncey on last Sunday's telecast of the Hall of Fame Game against Dallas, saying he was the NFL's best center last season. While Pouncey said he was pleased about Jones' extension and obviously wants to get locked up himself one of these days with Miami, he said he'll let Segal handle the specifics. "I pay him a lot of money to do his job, and I do my job on the football field," Pouncey said. The Dolphins were reluctant to extend long-term contracts earlier this summer to two top older players, having not given such deals to defensive tackles Paul Soliai and Randy Starks, who both turn 30 in December. But the Dolphins obviously want to really commit to top younger players. Jones is 25. Pouncey turned 24 two weeks ago. "Tell Jeff (Ireland, Miami's general manager) and Joel Segal to have a conference call and get that (extension) done," Dolphins star defensive end Cameron Wake said about Pouncey wanting to be with the team for the rest of his career.
