Today in his weekly chat on ESPN.com, Patriots beat writer Mike Reiss stated he believes Eagles corner-back Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is he would be at the "top of the list" for Patriot's off-season free agent targets. Here is the Q & A from the chat: Q: Mike, put yourself in Bill's shoes - forget the big names, which low risk, good value free agents would you pursue? Mike A: Jim, I'm probably a little less informed on the free agency at this time as I've been deep into the draft the last two weeks. But I've done some work there and here's one name that I put at the top of the list: Eagles CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Shortly after, Reiss stated that the Patriots have "always thought highly" of Rodgers-Cromartie, and that while he may be past his prime, he could serve as a solid replacement should Aqib Talib not be back. DRC's name surfaced as a potential trade-deadline target for the Pats when they ended up signing Talib. ...

Philadelphia Eagles Sign Dennis Dixon, May Look to Trade Nick Foles

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed QB Dennis Dixon off of Baltimore’s practice squad.  Not long after this news broke, a report by Mike Garafolo of USA Today came out that said the Chiefs were interested in trading for Nick Foles. The timing of Garafolo’s report seems quite auspicious, doesn’t it?  Michael Vick re-signed, Dixon is on board and the general feeling that Foles...

Despite different backgrounds, Pat Shurmur has a lot in common with Chip Kelly: “I think philosophically we both believe it’s important to score points”

When Pat Shurmur was selected as the Eagles offensive coordinator, many thought it was an odd choice. Chip Kelly is known for a wide open spread offense that speeds up the game. Shurmur is deeply rooted in the west coast offense, a style more traditional with a lot of balance. So, the question was asked, “Is this a good fit?” Kelly has said he’s not married to any scheme...

Tom Gamble returns to Eagles as V.P. of Player Personnel...

At the risk of pleading guilty to injecting pure off-season filler, I'm passing off this report that Tom Gamble has returned to the Eagles front office. Fans who wanted a more traditional "football mind" around Howie Roseman got their wish on Wednesday. Tom Gamble, who has 25 years of scouting experience in the NFL, has been hired by the Eagles as Vice President...

What do you want to see done with Wes Welker?

Duce Staley Says LeSean McCoy “Can Be The Best Running Back Ever”

Duce Staley was a pretty good tough, hard-nosed running back when he played for the Eagles, so now as a running back coach, Staley has a pretty keen eye for talent and ability. Staley was talking to Philly Mag recently, and jumped on a limb for the Eagles current starting running back Shady McCoy.  While discussing LeSean McCoy, Staley put it out there flat-out, saying McCoy “could...

Is Wes Welker the Patriots top priority? Matt Light thinks he should be

Now the cynics might first think, of course a former player is going to side with the player. Good point. However, Light has a pretty reasonable explanation for his defense. CSNNE: "If you take the heart and soul away from a team, it's not like open-heart surgery these days. He's a guy that you have try to find a way to make him right. I think he made really good...

Doug's Digs: Fourth Edition, Not-So-Off Season

It's the time of year when NFL teams are jockeying for position as the days to the draft and free agency both draw closer and closer. Is it just desperation, or do the great minds in the football world suddenly turn to mush when evaluating available talent? Even the commentators seem to spew forth at the mouth while forgetting the history of the players up for grabs. Is it just...

No Witness to Redemption

Warning: This is a very graphic post about what goes into dogfighting. It is pretty graphic at certain points. So, be warn. To me there exists nothing in this world which, given the right circumstances and given the appropriate amount and manner of retribution, can't be forgiven. The fallibility of our nature and the idea that -- at least here -- we have a measure of freedom...

According to the numbers, the Patriots don't need to pay big bucks

According to ESPN's John Clayton (and then written about by Mike Reiss), the Patriots were 8th in the league with regards to teams' payroll for the 2012 season. Also, Clayton was wise to point out that out of the 7 teams with higher payrolls than the Pats, NONE of them made it to the playoffs. He then passionately wrote of how a high payroll doesn't necessarily guarantee...
