Offensive line coach Mike Tice will take over for Mike Martz as offensive coordinator and will be joined by a "passing game" coach. According to multiple sources including NFL insider Jay Glazer, Bears offensive line coach Mike Tice will be promoted to offensive coordinator, filling the vacancy created by the departure of Mike Martz. Apparently the arrangement will involve another voice, with Glazer saying a “passing game” coach will work closely with Tice while Tice handles the running game. Tice, however, will hold the coordinator title. Tice knows the importance of running the football to protect franchise quarterback Jay Cutler and to control the tempo of the game. He had limited play calling as head coach in Minnesota. At first thought, Cutler’s quarterbacks coach in Denver, Jeremy Bates, whom the Bears sought to interview two years ago for the offensive coordinator position, could be the ideal choice to fill the “passing game” coaching r...

Mike Martz: No dirty laundry behind Bears exit

Despite the suppositions and theories about his predicted departure, former Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz adamantly downplayed that any issues existed between him and anyone else at Halas Hall. In an interview with the Sun-Times on Wednesday, a day after he resigned, Martz spoke glowingly of numerous Bears coaches and players, including head coach Lovie Smith, quarterback...

Why Mike Martz Should Not Be Considered for Offensive Coordinator

The Rams played their first full season in St. Louis in 1995 after moving from Los Angeles, which gave the city it's first taste of NFL football since 1987.  During that first year, the Rams finished with a 7-9 record. It was an improvement over their 4-12 finale in Los Angeles and at the time was the franchises' best record of the 90's, which perhaps gave the franchise...

Jay Cutler Let it Be Known He Didn’t Want Mike Martz to be Back

When Lovie Smith hired Mike Martz two years ago, it was clearly his choice at the end of a month-long process in which Jerry Angelo suggested other candidates. A source described it as essentially an “anyone but” situation for the general manager, but authority over the coaching staff belongs to the head coach and Smith got his man after the Bears reached out to a variety...

Bears promote Tice to offensive coordinator

The Chicago Bears promoted Mike Tice to offensive coordinator on Friday to replace the departed Mike Martz. Tice had been the team's offensive line coach for the past two seasons after spending four campaigns as an assistant in Jacksonville. He was also a former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Martz resigned as offensive coordinator on Tuesday morning on the same day that...

The End of the Cutler-Martz Bromance

Jay Cutler was not wild about Mike Martz's hiring, but the two quickly became friends during training camp in 2010. There were jokes -- possibly made right here -- about the bromance that developed. Two days ago, Cutler reportedly told Lovie Smith he was ready to move on without Martz. How did it fall apart so quickly? It started with Martz's inability to tailor his...

The Bears Beat (01.05.12): Smith says Cutler had no say in Martz departure

Bears head coach Lovie Smith insisted that quarterback Jay Cutler had no say in the decision for offensive coordinator Mike Martz and the team to part ways. Martz refused to air dirty laundry after his exit. And the organization will seek permission to speak to personnel man Eric DeCosta of the Baltimore Ravens, a team with a good draft history and personnel moves. Lovie Smith insists...

Bears Promote Mike Tice to Offensive Coordinator

According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports,  the Chicago Bears have promoted offensive line coach Mike Tice to become their new offensive coordinator. Tice will be in charge of the running game and the Bears will pair him with a passing coach. Glazer indicated that the Bears are looking for more of a run first offense,  which makes sense since they’re more talented at running...

Tice Named Offensive Coordinator

Chicago Bears offensive line coach Mike Tice has been named the new offensive coordinator. The news was confirmed on the team's Web site Friday morning. Tice will call the plays and continue to work with the offensive line, according to the release. Tice Yes-DeCosta No

Catching up on today’s news on a busy day for my “real” job. That didn’t take long: today the Bears officially promoted Mike Tice to offensive coordinator. No surprise there at all. Let’s just hope this goes better than the “promotion” of John Shoop to replace Gary Crowton. That didn’t go so well. Interesting thing about Lovie. ...

What Mike Tice's Promotion Means

The Chicago Bears Friday promoted Mike Tice to offensive coordinator, moving him up from the offensive line coach he had held for nearly two years. Tice, who was the head coach at Minnesota and the assistant head coach for offense at Jacksonville, is the right man for the job. He knows the players' strengths and weaknesses well, has experience calling plays, and helped the...

Bears Promote Mike Tice To Offensive Coordinator

The Chicago Bears have promoted offensive line coach Mike Tice to offensive coordinator, Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports. Though Tice has head coaching experience in the NFL, he has never been a coordinator. An opportunity to coordinate the Tennessee Titans was blocked by the Bears last offseason. To account for a lack of experience at this position, Glazer adds that Tice will...
