Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review is reporting Coach Tomlin has met with Jim Caldwell.  No one knows what position it was for or if it was even an interview because these two are old friends from their time on Tony Dungy’s Staff back in Tampa Bay. They met at the Omni William Penn Hotel this morning.

If this was an interview it will be the first outside interview that anyone has heard about.  It is nice to hear something.  We know they are working on something but just to give us a whiff of what is going on can make everyone feel better.   As of right now Randy Fichtner is the only candidate on anyone’s mind.  That was all we had heard.  It is nice to see Tomlin putting in the time to meet with others and making sure he makes the right choice.

Caldwell could also be hired even if Fichtner becomes the OC.  Caldwell has spent most of his NFL Career as a Quarterbacks Coach.  He could replace Fichtner in that spot if he is hired.  He was that for his entire NFL career before becoming the Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

If Caldwell is hired I would hope that it is the latter option.  I am not a fan of Caldwell.  He had Peyton Manning his whole time at Indianapolis as the Quarterbacks Coach.  Look what happened after Peyton got hurt.  Peyton ran the offense.  Without him it was weak.  Caldwell also has never been an Offensive Coordinator in the NFL.  He has never called a play.  While at Indianapolis Tom Moore and Clyde Christensen made all the play calls.

Caldwell is a good leader and good with his teams.  He does show good discipline in his coaching.  It will take me a while to get around it though if we hire a coach who has NEVER CALLED A SINGLE PLAY IN THE NFL!!!
