You wanna know a more toxic combination than Vodka and Tequila? Try vodka, tequila and a video camera. It catches you at your most raw, your most obnoxious and in many cases, your most honest form. It lets your inner asshole shine brightly. And that’s exactly what we got recently from Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper. While attending a Kenny Chesney concert, and apparently most Chesney fans are just delightful, Cooper got caught using a racial slur in a tantrum against a security guard. Check it out. The only thing more repulsive than that would have been, “Do you know who I am, Ni**er?!” Cooper has since gone on the predictable apology tour. He tweeted his apology. He apologized to reporters. He apologized to his teammates. He apologized to the National Association of Black Security Guards (which may or may not exist.) Cooper also released this statement which says: “I am so ashamed and disgusted with myself. I want to apologize. I have been offensive. I have apologized to my coach, to Jeffrey Lurie, to Howie Roseman and to my teammates. I owe an apology to the fans and to this community. I am so ashamed, but there are no excuses. What I did was wrong and I will accept the consequences.” So basically, he’s super, duper sorry peeps! Oopsie daisy on that whole n-word thing. Now let’s all listen to “Accidental Racist” over a cold one and call it a day! Eagles quarterback Mike Vick is apparently ready to move on. He said he talked to Cooper and he believes his teammate is sincere. But given how desperate Vick has been for forgiveness for himself over the past few years, that’s no surprise. Vick’s brother Marcus however was not so moved by Cooper’s apology. He put out a $1,000 bounty on Cooper for the season. Pure class! While it’s great that Cooper immediately owned up to what he did and didn’t make excuses for himself, I can’t help but still be skeeved out by what he did when he thought no one was looking. That’s always the true test of a man’s character. He’s probably not an evil guy but he’s definitely shown that the force of a racist douche-bag lies deep within. It’s a free country, so he can say whatever he wants. But fans and non-fans alike reserve the right to think he’s a p.o.s. for verbally attacking a security guard who wouldn’t let him and his precious entourage go backstage. Hopefully this incident has changed Cooper for the better. Hopefully he’ll gain just a dose of humility from the scorn he’s received as a result of this. And maybe getting the support of his African American teammates in this ordeal will change whatever negative sentiments he appears to have that would make him think it’s okay to speak to someone that way. Only time will tell. But for now, he can pretty much suck it as far as I’m concerned. Oh…and I highly suggest that in light of his “accidental racism”, he brace himself for more than one “accidental crotch kick” this season.
