Minnesota Vikings (8-6) at Houston Texans (12-2) The Vikings kept their playoff hopes alive last week, as they are one of many 8-6 teams in the NFC. They are long shot hopes, however. Not only do they not control their own destiny, their final 2 games are against Houston and Green Bay, two of the better teams in the NFL. Making matters worse, the Vikings are in a bad spot trends wise here. Teams are 45-19 ATS since 2008 as non-divisional home favorites before being divisional road favorites since 2008. The Texans have no distractions on the horizon and teams generally cover in this situation. Going off that, non-conference home favorites are 37-18 ATS before being divisional road favorites since 2002. The Vikings, meanwhile, have a distraction next week, as they have that aforementioned Green Bay game. Non-divisional road dogs are 47-72 ATS since 2002 before being divisional road dogs. The Vikings also struggle mightily on the road, winning just 2 of 7 games on the road. Those games...

Christian Ponder's future resides in the next few weeks

The Viking faithful knows it; Christian Ponder knows it, as well as Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers. The elephant in the room has just moved a little, just a little. However, far down the road it may seem, Smith is a good addition to a football team that needs a quarterback who can manage a game, but go outside the box. Ponder is still young in his second year, but if your...

Toronto Star Columnist Cathal Kelly takes a misguided shot at Adrian Peterson as the Vikings attempt to win their way into the playoffs

With an article that feels like it was written before the game had kicked off Kelly, a sports columnist for the Toronto Star issued a scathing column with the basic premise that the Vikings were failing this season because they were relying too heavily on Adrian Peterson. The piece fails to take into account where the Vikings would be without Peterson this season (certainly not facing...

Vikings vying for playoffs with sore Peterson

One year ago, Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier approached the postgame news conference and was ready to bask in the glory of a pre-Christmas victory that snapped a six-game losing streak, even though star running back Adrian Peterson's career was in doubt following a major knee injury. That was then. Now, Peterson leads the NFL with 1,898 yards rushing and is only 207...

Adrian Peterson Worthy of MVP? All Day

Man, he’s fast. Very. At the moment all eyes are on Adrian Peterson, the NFL’s most dynamic running back. Against his opponents on the ground, Peterson bursts through the seam and races down the field, then drives into the end zone. The beauty of the Vikings’ resurgence in the Twin Cities, a town where fans haven’t had much to be excited about, is because of Peterson’s...

Upset at the hands of the Vikings leaves the Texans with something to ‘Ponder’

It wasn’t supposed to be this way for the Houston Texans. The team with the best record in the AFC got their hats handed to them in New England, and now they have to deal with the humiliation of getting upset by the Vikings, who not many gave a chance to win this game. The Vikings keep their playoff hopes, while the Texans were kept from clinching home-field advantage throughout...

Vikings' playoff hopes alive with 23-6 win

The Vikings didn’t get a massive performance from Adrian Peterson, but they did get a big upset on the road to stay in the playoff hunt.

Peterson, Watt hope to follow Megatron into record book

One major single-season NFL record fell this weekend, and two others remain on watch as the season heads toward the final week. Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin "Megatron" Johnson began the NFL weekend Saturday night by catching 11 passes for 225 yards against the Atlanta Falcons. He increased his total to 1,892 receiving yards on the season, besting the mark of former...

Texans to Watch: Vikings Edition

The 12-2 Texans face the 8-6 Vikings in a rematch from the last preseason game of the year, which already seems like last year.  Of course, this game has many more implications – a win for the Texans and they seal home field advantage throughout the playoffs.  This game also features MVP candidate Adrian Peterson, who missed the preseason while recovering from knee surgery....

Records Were Made to Be Broken

With two weeks left in the regular season, the race for MVP has been whittled down to a two-man contest, Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson. While arguments can also be made for Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and J.J. Watt, the reality is that Manning and Peterson both overcame impossible, insurmountable odds. And both performed at a level that exceeded all expectations. Manning, as...

Notebook: Run game won despite a stifled A.P.

The Vikings didn’t get a 100-yard game from Adrian Peterson, but they still easily won the ground game thanks to an impressive defensive effort and Christian Ponder’s timely rushes. Plus, more than a dozen notes that tell the tale of the Vikings’ 23-6 win.

Following up on the Sunday Spotlight

A couple days ago I wrote a spot addressing the five most important players to keep an eye on this Sunday: Peterson, Romo, Roethlisberger, the Giants d-line, and Russell Wilson. Here’s how it all played out. Adrian Peterson may not have set the rushing record, but he did do a lot of damage and took all the defensive attention, allowing Christian Ponder to have his first effective...

Vikings defense stifles Texans on the road

The Minnesota Vikings strengthened their once slim playoff chances with Sunday's 23-6 win on the road against the Houston Texans, one of the top teams in the AFC. The win, after Minnesota's earlier struggles on the road this season, was unlikely, but dominating. The Vikings proved worthy of their playoff status with their most impressive win since 2009. Here's how they...

Former Vikes’ QB Embarrassed with Minnesota Passing Game

Former Vikings QB Fran Tarkenton passed his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, so he knows a thing or two about how an offense should be ran, and what a passing game should consist of. With his old team struggling in the era of pass-happy teams, he is embarrassed by the product the Vikings are putting on the field for the fans. Former Vikings QB Frank Tarkenton is none too happy...
