The Minnesota Vikings will play host to the San Diego Chargers tonight at Mall of America Field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Dome tonight. This will be the third preseason game for both teams.  The Vikings are 1-1 and the Chargers are 2-0.

Christian Ponder is coming off a great game against the Buffalo Bills when he threw 10-13 for 136 yards and his first touchdown of the preseason.  Ponder will look to continue this against the Chargers, who the Vikings played last year on opening day, but with a different starting quarterback.

Last year when the Vikings played the Chargers, the Vikings jumped out to a commanding 17-7 lead at the end of the first half.  However, the Vikings offense completely collapsed as they got shut down in the second half and lost the game 24-17.

Vikings' then starting quarterback Donovan McNabb played an absolutely offensive offensive game.  He threw 7/15 for 39 yards.  No, that is not a typo, he only had 39 yards passing.  He also threw an interception on his first pass of the season for the Vikings.  It was an abysmal beginning for an abysmal season.

Chargers' quarterback Phillip Rivers threw 33/48 for 335 yards and two touchdowns and two picks.  He nearly threw more completions than McNabb threw yards.  Rivers is still the starter for the Chargers and he will be looking to bring the Chargers back to the playoffs after a sub par season.

Ponder, however, will be looking to solidify himself as the franchise quarterback for the Vikings.  He can do that by starting out well in this third preseason game.  He has pretty much won himself the starting job for this upcoming season so far, now he just needs to continue to give the coaches no doubts.

Adrian Peterson will still be out this game.  This means Toby Gerhart will once again take on most of the running.  Gerhart is getting the job done and will certainly play a larger role this year with the Vikings' not wanting to push Peterson too hard.

This is just a preseason game, but it will be interesting to see how the Vikings' offense plays tonight.  Hopefully they're chemistry will continue to grow and they will score a few more touchdowns.
