The rally bug bit the Minnesota Vikings again this afternoon as the Green Bay Packers came back from a 16-point deficit to tie the Vikings in Overtime. There is possible good news if you look at it that way. The Vikings are not sitting at (2-8-1) on the season and are trailing only the Jaguars and Texans for the worst record in football. One might wonder if the Vikings should fall flat to end the season to get the first overall selection in the NFL draft. Obviously, tanking on purpose would be absurd, head coach Leslie Frazier wants to keep his job and the players want to win, but if you get the first pick, you could draft a potential superstar quarterback that would set up a bright future. The best way for the Vikings to go about the rest of their season is to do a few simple things that will probably result in quite a few losses, but also be smart moves on behalf of the management. Toby Gerhart had the best game of his career rushing for 91 yards on eight carries vs. the Green Bay Packers.(Photo credit: Matthew Stockman/Getty Images North America) Josh Freeman should play quarterback for the rest of the season. The Vikings are paying the guy $3 million to sit on the bench. Yeah, what a waste of money. Let’s see what the guy has got, maybe he has something left in the tank.  Freeman will likely be slow in learning the offense and gaining chemistry with his teammates, this will result in more losses, but the positive will be more experience for Freeman in the Vikings system. Toby Gerhart had a stellar game for the Vikings rushing for 91 yards on eight carries. Gerhart will likely test free agency next season and today he proved the he could be of value to some teams. Of course, he rushed for his career best in yards against one of the worst rushing defenses in the NFL, but let’s not forget that Adrian Peterson is also running on a sore groin. The Vikings should look to use Gerhart a lot more and limit Peterson until he’s 100 percent healthy. They will need their star running back for the future. This mix up in the running game would hurt the Vikings chances of winning, but on the positive, it’d give Gerhart a chance to succeed and Peterson a chance to get healthy for next season. Minnesota is not going to have a winning record, so why not let Freeman lead the way. Ponder has proved to be nothing but mediocre. Peterson is banged up and shouldn’t be rushing as much for a team that is destined to finish in the cellar of the NFC North. This is not essentially tanking for the first pick, instead it’s choosing the smart route and giving the players the Vikings have invested in like Freeman and Peterson what’s best for them and the team down the road.
