Peter King of SI.com reports that a source has informed him that the Buccaneers would consider trading the Jets their first- and second-round picks in 2014 for CB Darrelle Revis.
King mentions that the Buccaneers are the “only serious bidder” for Revis at this point, and there’s a good chance that this is as far as Tampa Bay is willing to go in the negotiating process.
King refers to the talks between the two sides as being in a “fragile state” and adds that Tampa Bay reportedly still has concerns that Revis won’t be 100 percent next season.
King seems to think the Jets best option is to take the offer for the Bucs’ 2014 draft picks in case they do end up parting ways with head coach Rex Ryan.
If Tampa Bay were to bow out trade talks, the Jets may have a hard time finding anything close to what the Buccaneers are reportedly offering them. Waiting until the draft in the hope that interest will increase is a huge risk on their part. As is keeping Revis and trying to work out a long-term extension during the season.
This very well could be their best option for Revis.
Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that sources have mentioned that the Buccaneers would have no trouble reaching a long-term agreement with CB Darrelle Revis, but the main issues is related to draft compensation.
Source informed the Daily News that the Buccaneers would be willing to pay Revis an annual salary of $12 million-$13 million.
Mehta adds that it’s “unlikely” that the Buccaneers would willing to include their No. 13 overall pick in the upcoming draft in a deal.
Rick Stroud of the Tampa Times recently reported that the Buccaneers were at least willing to consider the idea of including the pick in a trade for Revis.
It’s worth noting that this is only report that we’ve come cross that has suggested that Tampa Bay is even considering the idea.
As of now, it appears as though the Buccaneers are the only suitor for Revis, which really isn’t helping the Jets in their attempt to secure the best deal for their Pro Bowl cornerback. The market for him could pick up as the draft nears, but even then it’s hard to image a number of teams lining up to send the Jets a first-round pick and then pay Revis a missive contract.
