The 1991 NFL Season was one of the more frustrating seasons of my childhood. Bill Parcells “retired” from coaching, Bill Belichick moved on to the Cleveland Browns, and Ray Handley took over the sidelines and castrated Lawrence Taylor and Carl Banks with his read-and-react defense while never firmly deciding on whether or not Phil Simms or Jeff Hostetler was the starting QB. But what made me more upset was watching the Washington Redskins dominate the NFL, and the Giants. The Skins had not beat the Giants the previous 3 seasons and absolutely owned them in 1991. They did this with some guy named Mark Rypien suddenly becoming the best QB in the league for that year. This Canadian finished 14-2, completing nearly 60% of his passes, while throwing for 3500 yards, 28 TDs and only 11 picks. Joe Gibbs could wield magic back in those days.

Rypien hung around the league for the next decade, but never repeated, or came close to the success he had in 1991. But he has passed on his talents to his…daughter. Angela Rypien is the starting QB for the Seattle Mist of the Lingerie Football League. She recently debuted in a win over the Green Bay Chill, throwing 3TDs on 6-16 for 81 yards. I guess 6 completions ain’t bad when half of them went for 6.

Mark Rypien was in Wisconsin to cheer his daughter on, and despite the gratuitous nature of the league, he said there was some real football being played.

“Once the first snap happens and they start smacking each other around, you lose sight of all of that and you’re looking at the technical aspects of the game,” he told Weber.

Yes, Mark, that’s the intrigue. I totally forget about what they look like once the ball is snapped as well.
